Who is Theiss Landscape Works? Expand

Theiss Landscape Works is a full-service landscape company serving residential and commercial properties throughout the Greater Houston area. We focus on landscapes that are thoughtfully planned, properly installed, and built to perform over time.

Who do you typically work with? Expand

We work with homeowners, business owners, property managers, and commercial decision-makers who want their landscapes done correctly and maintained with long-term performance in mind. Many of our clients come to us when they are building new, renovating existing spaces, or correcting ongoing landscape and drainage issues.

What areas do you serve? Expand

We serve homeowners across Greater Houston, including Cypress and surrounding communities. Service availability may vary by project type and schedule.

What makes Theiss Landscape Works different from other landscape companies? Expand

Our work starts with planning and continues well beyond installation. We consider drainage, plant spacing, irrigation, and long-term care during every project. This approach helps reduce common issues like plant failure, standing water, and premature wear.

Do you offer both design and installation? Expand

Yes. We provide landscape design and installation so projects are planned and executed by the same team. This creates consistency between what is designed and what is built.

Can you help fix problems from a previous landscape project? Expand

Yes. Many homeowners contact us to address drainage issues, failing plants, poor layout, or systems that were not installed correctly. We evaluate what exists and recommend practical improvements rather than starting over when possible.

How do I get started? Expand

The process begins with a conversation. Contact our office to schedule a consultation so we can learn more about your property, goals, and timeline.

Landscape Design

What does your landscape design process look like? Expand

Our design process starts with understanding how you want to use your outdoor space, what problems you want solved, and how your property functions today. We evaluate drainage, sun exposure, soil conditions, and existing features, then create a design that balances appearance, usability, and long-term care needs. Once the design is complete, we review it with you and make refinements before moving into installation planning.

Do I need a design before starting a landscape project? Expand

Yes. A design gives direction, prevents costly changes during installation, and helps make sure the finished landscape performs as expected. Even smaller projects benefit from a clear plan that accounts for plant placement, spacing, grading, and future growth.

Is there a fee for landscape design? Expand

Landscape design fees vary based on the size and complexity of the project. Design allows us to invest the time needed to plan your property correctly and avoids guesswork during installation. Design fees are discussed upfront so expectations are clear before any work begins.

Will I be able to make changes to the design? Expand

Yes. Collaboration is part of the process. We present the design, explain the reasoning behind it, and gather your feedback. Adjustments are made so the final plan reflects your goals while still working with site conditions and long-term performance in mind.

How long does the design process take? Expand

Most residential landscape designs take a few weeks from the initial consultation to final approval. Timing depends on project scope, revision needs, and seasonal demand. Your team will give you a realistic timeline at the start of the process.

Can you design with future phases in mind? Expand

Yes. Many homeowners choose to complete their landscape in phases. We design with future additions in mind so lighting, planting, irrigation, and hardscape elements can be added later without disrupting the original layout.

Do you design landscapes that are easy to maintain? Expand

Maintenance is considered during the design phase. Plant selections, spacing, irrigation layout, and material choices all affect long-term care. We design landscapes that can be maintained properly, whether by the homeowner or through a professional maintenance program.

Will the design account for drainage and grading issues? Expand

Yes. Drainage and grading are critical parts of successful landscape design in the Cypress area. We evaluate water flow, low areas, and soil conditions to reduce standing water, protect structures, and support healthy plant growth.

What happens after the design is approved? Expand

Once the design is approved, we move into scheduling and installation planning. Your design becomes the roadmap for construction, plant placement, and system layout so the installation process runs smoothly and stays consistent with the original plan.

Is my project officially complete or is there a final walkthrough? Expand

Every project includes a final walkthrough once installation is complete. During this visit, we review the work with you, answer questions, and confirm everything meets the agreed-upon scope and your expectations. We also provide a free moisture meter and show you how to use it to monitor your plants’ moisture levels. This ensures that any final details are addressed and that you feel confident about your finished landscape.

Who do I contact if I notice an issue after completion? Expand

Your Customer Success Manager or you can call the office.

How long does it take for the landscape to fully establish? Expand

Most landscapes take 1–2 growing seasons to fully establish. Trees and larger shrubs may take 2–3 years to develop strong roots and reach maturity. During this time, plants are still adapting and building root systems, so they may require more attention and monitoring early on.

Landscape Maintenance & Care Tips

Do you offer ongoing maintenance or care programs? Expand

Yes. Theiss Care offers ongoing maintenance and care programs designed to keep your landscape healthy and attractive throughout the year. These programs can include routine maintenance, seasonal pruning, fertilization, and proactive plant health care.

When should I schedule my first professional maintenance visit? Expand

Your first professional maintenance visit is typically recommended within 4–6 weeks after installation, once plants have had time to settle in. This allows for light pruning, adjustments, and early issue identification.

How often should I water, and for how long? Expand

Watering needs vary based on plant type, soil, weather, and whether your landscape is newly installed or established. In general, deep, infrequent watering is better than light, frequent watering because it encourages deeper root growth and improves drought tolerance. Newly installed plants need more consistent moisture while they establish. Established plants typically do best with a deep soak once or twice a week rather than daily watering.

Please note: We do not provide specific watering schedules or timing advice, as this can vary greatly depending on your exact situation. Towards the end of completion of your project, your CSM will schedule a final walk with you. During your final walk, the CSM will provide you with a moisture meter, free of charge, and teach you how to use it for monitoring the watering habits.

What plants require special care or attention? Expand

Some plants need more care than others based on how they grow, their seasonal needs, or sensitivity to weather. Newly installed plants require closer monitoring as their roots establish. Flowering plants, ornamental grasses, and specialty or accent plants may need occasional pruning, fertilizing, or seasonal adjustments to look their best. Our team designs landscapes with these needs in mind and is happy to help identify any areas that may benefit from extra care or attention.

When should I fertilize or prune for the first time? Expand

Fertilizing: Most plants benefit from their first fertilization after they’ve had time to settle in, usually 6–8 weeks after installation. This helps support healthy growth without stressing newly planted roots.

Pruning: For most shrubs and plants, wait until they are fully established, typically after the first growing season. However, some plants may need light shaping sooner. Your Customer Success Manager or our office can advise based on your specific landscape.

How should I prepare my landscape for extreme heat or freezes? Expand

Preparing your landscape ahead of extreme temperatures helps protect plants and reduce stress. For extreme heat, ensure plants are well established, properly mulched, and monitored for stress. For freezes, covering sensitive plants, protecting exposed irrigation components, and avoiding pruning before a freeze can help limit damage.

What should I do during a freeze alert or heavy rain event? Expand

During a freeze alert, protect sensitive plants, avoid pruning, and adjust irrigation as needed. For heavy rain events, avoid foot traffic on saturated soil and monitor for pooling water or drainage concerns once conditions improve.

What is normal plant stress? Expand

Temporary leaf drop, yellowing, or slowed growth after installation or during temperature swings is normal and is known as transplant shock. These signs can also indicate improper watering. If you notice them, contact your Customer Success Manager and share photos so we can advise. Sudden collapse, severe wilting despite proper watering, or visible pest damage should be reported promptly.

Irrigation & Lighting Systems

How do I operate and adjust my irrigation system? Expand

Your irrigation system is designed to meet the needs of your landscape, but it may require occasional adjustments based on weather, seasonal changes, and plant growth. Use the controller to set schedules for watering days and run times, adjust watering duration based on seasonal needs, check that all zones are running properly, and avoid overwatering by using the moisture meter provided during your final walkthrough.

If you need help operating or adjusting your irrigation, please contact our office or your Customer Success Manager. We can provide guidance and connect you with Theiss Care for professional irrigation support.

Do I need seasonal irrigation maintenance? Expand

Yes. Seasonal irrigation maintenance helps keep your system running efficiently, prevents issues, and helps control water usage. Typical seasonal checks include verifying coverage, checking for leaks or broken heads, adjusting schedules, and winterizing or reactivating the system as needed.

Warranties

What is covered under the plant warranty and for how long? Expand

Our plant warranty covers plant material that fails due to installation-related issues within the warranty period. The warranty period is 90 days starting on the planting date.

Please note: Our warranty does not cover damage caused by weather-related issues, pests, disease, neglect, or improper care.

Are hardscape items such as pavers, walls, drainage, and lighting under warranty? Expand

Yes. Our hardscape installations including pavers, retaining walls, drainage systems, and landscape lighting are covered under a workmanship warranty. This warranty applies to issues related to installation quality. Normal wear and tear, extreme weather events, or damage caused by misuse or third parties are typically not covered. Some materials or fixtures may also carry manufacturer warranties, which vary by product.

For specific warranty details related to your project, please contact our office or your Customer Success Manager.

What voids the warranty? Expand

The plant warranty may be voided by conditions outside of our control, including improper or inconsistent watering, lack of routine maintenance or care, extreme weather events, pest or disease issues not related to installation, physical damage from pets or vehicles, or changes made to the landscape by others after installation.
